## FAQ

### Is Clerk cheaper than Auth0?

For many SaaS teams that need paid auth features, Clerk is often cheaper and more transparent. Clerk Pro is $20/mo billed annually and includes 50K MRUs plus 1 Enterprise connection, with published overage rates. Auth0's free tier is generous at 25K MAU, but its paid plans start at $35/mo for Essentials and $240/mo for Professional, with higher user and SSO tiers moving into custom pricing. The gap is clearest for B2B/SSO-heavy apps: Clerk includes one Enterprise connection on Pro with published pricing for additional connections, while larger Auth0 SSO needs move into custom or Enterprise tiers.

### What happens when I exceed the first 50,000 monthly retained users or 100 monthly retained organizations?

Once you exceed 50,000 monthly retained users you will be required to upgrade to the Pro plan. Once you exceed 100 monthly retained organizations, you will be required to upgrade to the B2B Authentication add-on. Each user or organization beyond the free tier allowance will be added to your monthly bill.

You'll be given a one-month grace period so your application can continue to operate correctly.

### Is there a free trial?

All of our Pro tier features are available to try in the development instance of your application, allowing you to test the full functionality of Clerk without being constrained by a traditional trial period. All features are properly tagged in the Dashboard, so you'll know if a specific feature requires an upgrade to use in production.

### What is "First Day Free"?

"First Day Free" is our way of helping you avoid charges for users that try your app and do not return. Since we don't count users as active unless they sign in at least one more time after the first 24 hour period, the first day the user access your application is free of charge.

### Is Clerk pricing based on MAU or something else?

Clerk pricing is based on Monthly Retained Users (MRU), not traditional MAU. A user only counts as retained if they return to your app at least 24 hours after signing up, so someone who signs up and never comes back does not count toward MRU billing. That means MRU is often lower than raw MAU, especially for apps with lots of one-time signups or trial users, making Clerk's effective cost lower than a simple MAU-to-MAU comparison would suggest.

### What is considered a monthly retained user?

A monthly retained user is a user who visits your app in a given month at least one day after signing up. This free day avoids unwelcome fees from users who don't activate.

### What is considered a monthly retained organization?

A monthly retained organization is an organization that has at least one monthly retained user in that organization in a given month. Like users, you are only billed for retained organizations.

### Is Clerk good for B2C apps?

It depends on the type of B2C app. Clerk can be a strong fit for paid consumer apps, prosumer tools, marketplaces, communities, and subscription products where retained users are valuable and polished auth/user management matters. But if you're building a free, ad-supported, or very low-ARPU consumer app, Clerk's per-MRU model may feel expensive once you outgrow the free tier. In those cases, alternatives like Supabase Auth, which includes 100K MAU on Pro/Team, or Firebase Auth for basic email/social auth may be cheaper. The simple rule: Clerk is easiest to justify when retention maps to revenue; for massive free audiences, run the unit economics first.

### What happens to my Clerk bill if my app goes viral?

Less than you might fear. Clerk bills on MRU, not raw signups or MAU, so a spike of users who sign up and never return after the first day does not count toward your MRU bill. If returning users push you past 50K MRUs, Clerk gives you a one-month grace period so your app keeps running while you upgrade. From there, you move to Pro ($20/mo billed annually, or $25/mo monthly) and pay published overage rates for MRUs above 50K, starting at $0.02/MRU/mo with volume discounts at higher tiers.
